http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2010/04/26/attention_whole_foods_shoppers?page=0,2 I personally don't see problems with some aspects of organic farming practices like more frequent crop rotations, but this article pretty much nails why everyone who east "only organic" are a bunch of deluded fags in the same camp as the religious loons.
Bad shit happens to all of us, most of the time even every day. And this is the thread to talk about it. We're here to give advice and talk things over if you want to.
Turned in a nonfunctioning program for my project that will most likely not get graded at all or nothing above a 30. This will fuck up my GPA horribly. Couldn't find any help and despite many hours, could not manage it to get it to function properly. The thought of turning it in makes me sick to my stomach as even my best effort isn't worth looking at.
>>84 Well shit... I hope it doesn't turn out too bad. I know I don't have much of a clue about Matlab, but you could've asked me nevertheless, maybe I could've been of some help... Is the class over now or do you still have to do more projects for it?
>>84 Fuck, I'm sorry I didn't read this before. If you have any other projects in Matlab, I can get some help for you. I don't program in it myself, but a few of my friends do
Might as well put this out there... What are your thoughts on the IRC channel? How has it affected the chan itself, do you think it's a good thing to have that IRC channel or not? What's bad or good about it? I'm just genuinely curious, since I'm sure that it has some impact, but I can't guess what your feelings are about it of course.
>>22 That may be true, but at the same time it's also a lot harder for others to join in, since anyone can just post on a thread, but the irc sometimes doesn't work (see cony) and requires other software and knowledge. So yes, some of us have gotten closer together, but I'm quite sure we've also lost others that have been lurking more, due to the decrease in content. >>18 I am very glad about that actually. I was hoping I could get you to "contribute" more somehow.
Most of the time I just idle there...
>>23 Yep, I agree with this. The short time I was able to join in was fun and I can see why there's a decrease of traffic on the board itself
this thread is for little everyday stuff that is neat/mildly fascinating

Have you ever tried any recreational drugs, besides alcohol or tobacco?
> Caffeine is a drug Yeah I drink chocolate, coffee or cola every day.
let's discuss school shootings/bullying/online bullying/self-defense http://www.naplesnews.com/news/2012/jan/03/collier-judge-upholds-stand-your-ground-defense-ca/?partner=popular gif not related
>>47 No it wasn't his own fault that he died. It was his own fault that he got attacked.
>>48 Well we've reached the point, I think, where we can go no further. I disagree with you and that's that.
I have personally been in a nearly-fatal fight before. It was two kids older than me almost beating me to death. That was not an exaggeration, I nearly fucking died. So yeah, stuff like this is serious shit and I do not like it. The concept that someone could be sent jail for blatant self-defence is insane.
So I determined the lengths of the nucleotides are 21, 209, and 343 respectively. This would mean that the second method is the most efficient, seeing as how there is an excess with the other two methods and one costs more than the other. HOWEVER, I am having difficulty finding teh primers.
>>109Ah, I see, you can only make oligos of <=21bp using the first synthesis method. I get it now.Have a look at the picture - you need the oligos to overlap by at least 15bp to hybridise with each other. Then a polymerase can fill in the overhanging ends. The overlapping region (in green) has 16 nucleotides - each oligo overlaps the other by the 8 nucleotides that each has past the centre, so that's 16 in total.Technically, we only need 15, so we could have one 68bp oligo and one 67bp one, and save a dollar?
>>110 Oh...My... If you had not told me that, my entire concept of how the process worked would have been screwed up. Thanks a million!
>>111 No problem!
with the way some countries are trying to pass laws that censor, maim, and neuter free speech, what do you think the internet will be like in ten years? do you think these laws that keep getting pushed will be passed and eventually people will riot over the loss of their beloved internet porn? or do you think that if they do get passed they will repealed soon after?
Well, logically speaking, as long as computers exist in a large network, there will always be a layer that contains free speech somewhere. It'll probably be empty as heaven and damn near impossible to access... but the porn will not be silenced. I doubt it will go that far in the foreseeable future, though.
http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/opinion/2012/03/201232085932116344.html I feel this article also misses another point, though bringing it up would detract from the point of this great article, in that Apple did not need to exist for these products to become mainstream. I feel that lack of education in science is going to become are greater driving force of exploitation as the age of Technology continues. Simple beliefs such as "Apple" inventing one product, such as the MP3 player, can be used as marketing leverage not only against the consumer, but the techno-illiterate educated elite as well. Your thoughts and opinions?
I have come to the conclusion that things like this are inevitable and a sort of constant throughout humanity. There's a large percentage of people who do not want to be educated and will just take whatever is put in their ears and eyes, as long as it's loud and shiny enough. They will also spend their "precious time" promoting the same shiny thing without even thinking about a reasoning behind doing so or why the shiny thing is worth promoting at all.The reconnaissance has failed and will continue to fail, simply because most humans are lazy fucks. Not to mention that with our current lax of control over marketing bullfuckery an the living standards becoming higher and higher, this trend will probably still increase a lot in the future as well.As a tech-savvy and generally well-informed person and well, realist and rationalist at hand, I of course do not like these progressions at all, but I can't see any way that would make this become anything other than worse.>pic related, it's what society is and is becoming even more.
The bounds of me forgoing my typical self-destructive pride, is that these things are either: A. Ambiguous to me, requiring clarification where outside materials have failed me. B. "Grade-Destroyers" where I have no clue what is going on and need a boost. Since this is a rather selfish thread, this can also be Mithent's project progress thread. Also, any pictures of women with molecular structure tattoos that are not of THC are highly encouraged :D
This falls under "grade destroyer" and has already destroyed part of my first exam. I was given the gene sequence ATGTTCAT etc. and told to find the mutation that occurred to make the protein product give the sequence MVHKEP. I am confused by the MVHKEP part. I assumed these were the first letters of the amino acids encoded by the gene sequence, but the chart provided did not contain any amino acids starting with K or E, leading to complete destruction. What do these letters stand for and how to I find them? I feel this is too basic to ask the professor with looking retarded at this point and I cannot seem to find the answer via search engine.
No matter who you turn to in American politics, its a shitty deal any way you slice it. Though the userbase is more than half European, American politics is something everyone hates, and this is a thread to discuss your views and vent your rage. http://americanextremists.thecomicseries.com/comics/70
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-16937613 Looks like the conflict with Iran is becoming more and more likely everyday. The way this article talks, it is inevitable. I would never support a war to support Israel, as the US has no actual (as, not in some horribly convoluted way) benefit from joining. Can we just switch to complete nuclear already, as it threatens us less than total war with the middle east?
It looks like this Saturday is gonna be a pretty busy day all over Europe.Thoughts on this?
>>79 I'd love to take part at the one in Zürich, but I prolly won't be able to due to massive pain being scheduled at Saturday. (Gonna have to let one of my wisdom teeth be pulled this Friday)
>>80 Fuckin' ouch man. That's gonna hurt
>>81 I'll report on that as it happens.
Well I hope all of you have heard of this bullshit before, I think we even had a thread on STC1 about it.Either way, quite a couple of companies are apparently planning a black-out day to protest SOPA. (src: slashdot)Mojang/Minecraft/Notch already confirmed a planned black-out on their part. (src: twitter)What do you think of this?Is there even any point to these black-outs?Are there any alternatives to counter SOPA?
Oh wow.https://twitter.com/benhuh/statuses/159447396487663616In other news though.http://twitter.com/kn0thing/status/159660896107495424The official statement from the MPAA about the black-outs is hilarious:http://www.mpaa.org/resources/c4c3712a-7b9f-4be8-bd70-25527d5dfad8.pdfHOW DARE YOU do what you want with your free website and state your point of view?!

>>64 I can practically pick out the rhetorical devices with my bare hands in that MPAA letter. I might even do it. There is something chilling how someone at the MPAA can criticize other people for becoming "corporate pawns" for being forced not to experience a company's product at their own loss, whereas the MPAA has been forcing people to not experience stuff for money for decades. Pot calling the grass black.
So you ever wonder how chemists characterize all these complex long molecules? Probably not, but here is a chart explaining one of the most common ways they do so. This technique is known as NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance).
Saved.
Got anymore?
>>26 I'm not a chemist, but this reminded me: for some reason I scanned the draft version of some coursework I did years ago (I think I then drew it out as as large colour poster). So, um, enjoy my old sketchy work...
